All right, y’all, today’s episode, I want to talk about building a movement that builds community. When I started my podcast, I didn’t sell [00:07:00] anything. I had a podcast and I wanted to grow it. And I was really on a mission to grow it.
And although I didn’t know it at the time, what I was creating was a movement. I was creating a movement. I, my podcast name at that time was called Follow That Fear. I loved that name. I had to, I had to change it for trademark purposes, but I really was committed to the conversation around fear. I was committed to the conversation.
around what it takes to have fear and go anyway. I created a whole movement around it, and that’s what I want to talk about today. I’m going to tell you a little bit about my story, and then I’m going to tell you how you could create your movement. This is exactly what I’m going to walk you through.

All right, y’all, let’s get [00:09:00] started on the content. Okay, so here’s the deal. When I started my podcast, I gave you a little bit of a spiel before, but when I started my podcast, that was really the birth of like, I’m going to create conversations around fear. Before my podcast, I actually put on an event called Follow That Fear.
It was an in-person event. It was October of 2019. And I put this event on and we talked about fear and we talked about how it stopped us. And I created a whole training out of it. It was like, In the afternoon, I think it was a Thursday and I bought dinner for everyone and there were tickets that I sold.
And I remember wanting to continue that conversation, but I didn’t know how and I didn’t have the time to put on events every day. You know, every so often. So I decided to start a podcast and I called that podcast Follow That Fear. And what really it turned into was this hub where people felt safe enough [00:10:00] to talk about their fear.
People felt safe enough to DM me and say, I’m following my fear and like you’re inspiring me or your guests are inspiring me to like follow my fears. We created, like, what I created was a conversation that was safe to have about fear. And I didn’t really know it at the time, but I created this safe space where like, oh, it’s safe to have fear.
It’s normal to have fear. And because of that, I would get so much engagement of people telling me, that I followed my fear and did this. I followed my fear and did that. And continuously marketing my podcast, talking about fear, talking about how it plays a role that helped me grow an incredible community, an incredible community.[00:11:00]
It helped me. Um, not only build a community, but it really set the foundation of my future business because the first, I don’t know, nine months of my podcast, I didn’t even have a business. I wasn’t really selling anything, but I was giving and I was serving people and I was giving them value and I was making them think and I had podcast episodes.
For a long time, I did two podcast episodes a week. So here’s the thing. If you are a person who feels very confused about like what you need to post and it, you ask yourself, like, is this helpful? Would this actually help my future client? I don’t know if this is a problem that they have. I don’t know if this is good or what.
I want you to really listen to this and take action on these steps because I’m going to walk you through how to create your movement. Okay. Cause all of us [00:12:00] have it in us. It’s not something that like you, like if you started this business, you have a movement. All right. So let’s get started. So number one, I want you to ask yourself, why did you start?
Why did you start your business? What were the values that ignited you to start a business? Typically, there’s something, there’s something that triggers, like, triggered you to actually start the business you have. And if you don’t have a business, there’s something currently itching at you that’s important to you.
That’s important to you. I want you to ask yourself, why did you get started? What are your values? One of the stories I always tell when it comes to starting my podcast is the story about me sitting with my mom and my cousins at a table on a Sunday. And my mom was bragging [00:13:00] about me because I had just recently got a raise and I had asked for the raise and I was, you know, kind of forward about it.
And I told my mom, my mom was telling everyone, which I was pretty embarrassed about just because it was a lot of attention, but I remember my cousin and my tia. I think she’s my cousin in law. They were praising me and they were giving me all this like, Oh my God, that’s amazing.
And they were asking me about it. And I kept getting praised so much, which I’m so typically uncomfortable with. But I remember there was a moment there where I looked at them and I’m like, how come they don’t see what I see? Cause I see them as leaders. I see them as someone who can also do this. Like I was kind of just getting a lot of love, which was.
Fine. But I was like, you and I are no different. Like I’m nobody special. Like this is just, I just know that [00:14:00] I sh I’m, I’m good at negotiating because I practice negotiating because I learned that negotiating is necessary. And I remember I’m like, they need to have access to this information. Like anyone could do this.
It’s not just me. And that moment I really left and I was just like, how can I make, like how can I. Tell people like my cousins, right? Like, how, how can I just tell them what I think? Tell them what I know. Tell them the wisdom I have. And I decided to start a podcast., I thought to myself like, what am I gonna do now?
Originally it wasn’t supposed to be a podcast, but. It turned into a podcast and that was really the root of the why. So when I thought about it, my word, like the, actual movement that I wanted to start was, because I asked myself, what’s stopping them from doing this themselves? And I, my answer was fear.[00:15:00]
And I really thought about it and I’m like, I am so done with our community being scared to ask for negotiations. I’m so. I’m so tired of our community being scared to like show up with curly hair and red lipstick at work, or I’m so sick and tired of like our communities and this is specifically my community who I was thinking of like being humble and like doing what only what your job says to do and like not ruffling feathers END CREDITS I was so sick of it.
So when I started my movement, when I started talking about fear, it was really about like, I am so like, I am so sick and tired of the people that I know are genius and smart. I don’t, I want them to know that like, it’s safe to have fear and they can go after it. It’s safe to go after it. I wanted to give them examples.
When you’re picking a movement that aligns with you, I [00:16:00] really want you to ask yourself, at the end of the day, what do I want people to understand? What result do I want, like, my community to have? At the end of the day, what is, what would be so special to me to hear a person say, you help me do X, Y, Z. When you’re picking a movement, I really want you to ask yourself those questions.
What do you want for your people? What do you want for your community? What do you want for them at the end of the day? And I want you to pick something. For me, I picked a word. Like a word was just such a for me to get started. You could pick a word, you could pick a phrase, it really doesn’t matter, but what matters is you buying onto it and just saying, yeah, this is what we need and creating [00:17:00] conversations about it.
Creating conversations about your life. movement about your mission. I want you to identify it. I want you to name it and also decide that that’s enough and that it’s good enough. And let me tell you something. There are going to be other people who have your movement, but no one’s going to talk about your movement like you because you are a whole other human.
So don’t worry about other people. are talking about this topic. Don’t worry if there are books on it. That is normal. That is normal. What I want you to do, is step number three. So number one is like really like identify why you started. What are your values? Get clear on what’s important to you.
Number two is to pick a movement that aligns with you. At the end of the [00:18:00] day, what do you want for your people? Number three, talk about it, then talk about it some more. Here’s how your messaging becomes better as a coach, as a content creator. You talk about your movement over and over and over again. You talk about.
Everything under the sun around your movement. You help people, you share your wisdom, you share your experience with it. That’s how you refine your marketing. That’s how you get better. You talk about it more and more and more and more. I was recently doing the sales page for Show Up Real and I’m in the middle because this is a new program.
I’m like, this is pretty fresh. Like, this is very, very fresh marketing and like, I. Wanted to get straight on my messaging and I was in my head about it for a long, long time. [00:19:00] And it wasn’t until I started actually getting the words out of my head and onto paper and onto typing it out. That’s when my message became more and more and more clear because I talked about it because I used my brain.
I tried to articulate it. I want you trying to articulate. what you want for people, trying to articulate the wisdom that you have to share. I want you to articulate why it’s so important for people to have this transformation. I want you to articulate how they can find solutions to their problems for the people you’re trying to help.
That’s how you get better at messaging. That’s how you start really positioning yourself as a unique coach in the game. All right, number four, I want you to give before you receive, or I should, I could also say [00:20:00] give more than you receive. I really want you to let go of this fact of like, because you put out content, you deserve sales and you do so much.
And you people should be working with you because you do so much. It’s like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. I gave, I put content out. I gave valuable content out for a whole year before I made any money. Probably before that, to be honest. I had a blog, and then that blog didn’t work out. Then I had a YouTube account.
It was hard getting on YouTube. I had my Instagram where I was also giving value. I want you to always give before you receive. I want you to really, really, really give value. This is how you not only have a movement but create a movement that can grow into a business.[00:21:00]
into a business. All right. So when you’re creating your movement and you’ve identified it, you’ve kind of picked what you want to like be about what you want to talk about. You’re going out there and talking about it. You’re refining it. Always, always, always want you to make an offer or have an invitation for people to either follow you somewhere else or to work with you.
Every single time you put out a piece of value, I want you to invite people to listen to you on your podcast, follow you on Instagram or work with you one-on-one. There’s no wrong way, but I want you to be making offers. This is how your movement actually [00:22:00] conceptualizes. I remember like having a, building a movement is one thing, but creating the change in your community is another.
I remember early on in my business, I would look at people who would go viral and they would have a lot of followers. And I would think to myself, damn, like I wish I could go viral. I wish I could, you know, grow a ton of followers at once. But what I didn’t realize is followers don’t matter as much if you want to build a business, if you’re growing a business.
If you’re growing a business, followers are important, but they are not going to move the needle. Trust me, I’ve worked with a lot of clients with big audiences. If you want to really push the needle and create change in your community, I want you making offers, inviting people to work with you, but you don’t need all the followers.[00:23:00]
And what I found is when you create a movement that has true impact, the impact is so much greater when your clients get results. When your clients get results. We can talk about that on a different episode, but always have an offer, an invitation for people to follow you somewhere else or to invite them to work with you.
I always want you to tell them like, here’s where to find me. Here’s where to follow me. Make sure you download my, you know, training or whatever the case is, but you always want to be inviting them back to a movement on a different platform, or inviting them to work with you one on one. All right y’all, go out there.
and create that movement. Talk about it every single day [00:24:00] and make offers to help people. If you want to create your movement, if you want your programs, if you want your clients to really, really get more results, and if you want to become the coach that has content that is so unique that You grow your community and more people work with you.
