Today I’m gonna be answering some questions about Show Up Real, and I’m gonna get ready. While I do that, I’m gonna do my makeup and talk to you guys. So first things first, let’s talk about the difference between audience-building content and revenue-generating content. Okay, so here’s the thing. Inside Show Up Real, we have everything split up. So for those of you who are not brand new to coaching or brand new to starting a business and you want to build a community online, we will teach you how to build a movement, how to really become known for the movement that you’re building. When I started creating content, I kind of just posted a whole bunch of random things, not with any strategy at all. But when I decided to start my podcast, I really decided to start a movement. And I really decided to create like actually follow. At that time when I started my podcast, I didn’t even know what I was building. I didn’t know I was going to be a coach. I just knew that there was a community of people that I wanted to serve and I wanted to serve them.
So what I did was I started serving them. I created a podcast and I made it my mission to get the word out about my podcast. I made it my mission to really find the people who I was creating the podcast for. And I made it my mission to really talk about, at that time, because I didn’t really have a niche or anything like that, I really just focused on, let me talk about what I wanted to talk about. And at that time it was about fear. I wanted to talk about fear. I wanted to talk about how people need to understand that following their fear is normal. And the name of my podcast at that time was Follow That Fear. Now, at this time, I had no business. I was creating content, but it was very like, here’s what I’m doing with my family and here’s what I’m doing with this, and there wasn’t much going on. But when I started my podcast, I made it my mission to be like, okay. My podcast is a place where I’m going to teach Latinas and women of color about fear. And basically, I treated my podcast like this diary. And I remember what I would do is I would learn a strategy, I would take action on it, and then I would go to my podcast and deliver what I’ve learned from my podcast or from the learning. So what happened was my podcast became this diary of building a business and I made it my mission to learn how to market. I made it my mission to really intentionally grow my podcast. And what that looked like is me building community online, me actually starting, at that time, a brand new account. And I remember, this is not what I teach inside Show Up Real, but I remember at that time, every single person that followed my podcast account when I first was getting started, I used to send them an audio message. Every single person that followed me, I used to send them an audio message. Audio message. That means I was doing it per person. And I would say, welcome to the show up real, or at that time it was Follow That Fear. Welcome to the Follow That Fear podcast community. In this page, you’ll learn about this. I talk about this and we have podcast episodes come out every Tuesday. If you ever have any ideas or want me to talk about anything on the podcast, feel free to join. I used to send that to everybody.
And here’s why. Because I was in programs that were teaching you to like, kind of like be fake friendly and just like find people like all their stuff, comment some fake little comments, and then hope that they would follow you. That was kind of the strategy, but I really didn’t like that. And I wanted to really create a business that was an integrity with me and who I am and what I wanted to build. So at that time, I really just was focused on like, let me get good at marketing. Let me spread the word about my podcast and let me just make sure that I’m doing my job to market my podcast, which was filled with so much value. And what happened was I was so focused on getting my message out to my people that it grew quickly. I created 10k downloads, I think, within, I want to say it was, you know, I say now that it happened quickly, but it didn’t feel quick at that time. I think it was like seven months that I got 10k downloads, but I was so committed to learning how to market my podcast. Nothing else was on my mind. I didn’t have a coaching business at that time. I didn’t have offers. I just wanted people to listen to my podcast because I knew that the right people would get value from it.
This story that I’m telling you about my podcast was one of the reasons I really started Show Up Real because what I did prior to having my business was building a community online of strangers. Now that I have a multiple six-figure business, multiple six-figures on a regular basis, like every year now, I look back and I think, wow, my business did not build because of my network. I built my business on the community that I created. I created a community and I remember at that time I wanted a business, but I didn’t know what my business would be. And I remember telling myself, I need to continue doing my makeup. I remember telling myself at that time that I don’t need to know what my business will be, but I do want to build a community because there is going to be a business at some point and I want to have people to sell it to.
Learning how to build a small audience is such an important part of building your, or creating revenue through content. You gotta get the basics down to build an audience. And the way we think about it inside Show Up Real is I don’t want you to just build an audience, I really want you to consider them. Building a movement around what you believe because whatever business you have, one thing is for sure is that you started because you actually cared about something. You started your business because there’s a community that you actually want to serve.
So number one is if you are starting from scratch, Show Up Real will help you create, identify your movement, figure out what your movement is, figure out what platforms to start on, literally teach you how to be social on social media without being super cringy and fake.
